Oliver Badillo Dallas PAL Boxing Team
Oliver Badillo
This month we have a boxer who was chosen for his accolades in and out of the ring. USA Boxing DFW is proud to announce that the June 2014 ‘Boxer Of The Month’ is the one and only, hailing from Pleasant Grove, TX and Dallas Pal's pride and joy, Oliver Badillo. Applause!
From the first time I met this young man, I knew he was something special, a golden child. The admiration for this young man spans multiple factions amongst boxing teams, boxing officials and avid boxing fans like myself. Furthermore, when I saw him in the ring I was stunned by his talent, technique and style. A natural unorthodox boxer, Oliver never fails to put on a show for his audience. His longtime Coach/Mentor George Melendez describes him like this “Oliver is a very hard worker and he is a leader at out gym. Every day he’s at the gym putting in work striving to be the best at his craft”, says DPAL’s head coach. At 12 years old, his record already speaks for itself. Oliver has amassed an impressive win – loss record of 33-9, and he’s won just about every tournament that you can fathom for a kid his age. In recent memory, this young champion won the 2013 National PAL in Oxnard, California. Also he won first place at the Texas Silver Gloves in 2012 & 2013. A few months later, as the Texas Champion he won the Regional Silver Gloves Championship in Little Rock, Arkansas in 2012 & 2013. In 2012 he was the crowned champion at the Dallas Golden Gloves, however in 2013 he was unable to defend his title due to a conflict, he was scheduled to compete at the 2013 Regional Silver Gloves. All this has made Oliver rise in the rankings of amateur boxing. He is currently the #1 ranked boxer in the USA for 10-11yr olds at the 80lbs. division He plans on competing for the 2014 Ringside World Championship this year and to finish off the year, Oliver will be defending his State Silver Gloves title for his weight class. One other note, also competing in this year’s ‘Ringside’ tournament from Dallas PAL, is Angel Melendez who has piled up numerous amateur victories and is ranked #5 in the nation for 12-13yr olds at the 70lbs division.
Oliver has not only made his mark as a prizefighter but also continually makes his mark in the classroom. As a straight ‘A’ student at Mesquite Elementary School in Mesquite, TX he is an example to other kids in the gym and to his siblings at home. Not to mention all other kids in the sport of amateur boxing. He demonstrates to them what it takes to not only work hard in gym and become a great fighter but also how to work hard in the classroom and become a great student at the same time. Lastly, just ‘for the record’, his younger sister Candice Badillo is a force to be reckoned with, she is currently 13-0 and is the 2013 Ringside World Champion. So lookout when the Badillo’s are around, because they’re always ready to throw-down! Congratulations "Little Oliver"
